### How to add fractions- with different or same denominators

A fraction is a number expressed in the form of p/q where q is not equal to zero. For example 2/3 is said to be a fraction. Fraction consists of two parts called Numerator and Denominator. In this example, 2 is the numerator and 3 is the denominator. So denominator is the number showing the parts into which something is divided and the number showing the parts we take out of the total part is called numerator. The number written above the bar line is numerator and written below is the denominator.

Fractions are mainly of two types- like and unlike fractions. Like fractions are fractions with same denominator. Unlike fractions are the fractions with different denominators. I will show you how to add like as well as unlike fractions.

Like Fractions
• Like fractions have same denominators so it is easy to add like fractions. Here is an example. Consider two fractions with same denominators. Let the numbers be 2/3 and 4/3.
• 3 is the denominator. Add the top two numbers, then we will get the top part as 6 (i.e. 4+2). Now write the denominator 3. Thus the sum of fractions 2/3 and 4/3 is equal to 6/3.
• The next step is simplifying the fraction. Always remember that fraction is written in the simplest form. Thus the final answer is 2 (as 6 divided by 3 is 2).
• The simplest equation for adding ‘n’ number of like fraction is (numerator1 + numerator2+ ….numerator n)/denominator. Here, n is the last no.

Unlike Fractions
• In the case of unlike fractions the denominators are different. So we have to equalize the denominators.
• Consider two fractions 3/2 and 5/4. The denominators are different in this case so we have to make it equal.
• First decide what number should be multiplied with the denominator of first fraction to equalize with the denominator of second fraction.
• Remember that when the denominator is multiplied, the numerator too have to be multiplied with the same number.
• In this case denominator has to be multiplied with 2. Considering the above point numerator also has to be multiplied with 2.
• The first fraction becomes 6/4 and the second fraction is 5/4.
• Now the denominators are same, the fractions have become like.
• Follow the same procedures given above for addition of like fractions.
